History
Since its founding in 1980, the Association of Dominican Classical Artists has been presenting talented artists performing works from the traditional repertoire of the European, Latin American, and Caribbean masters, and also the work of lesser-known composers. We seek not only to create a space for these artists, but to do so in a way that brings this music and their talent to audiences that would otherwise not have access to live performances. And although our repertoire is diverse, we are most especially devoted to the classical or "art" music of the Dominican Republic--music that is deeply rooted in folklore and is expressive of Dominican identity.
The Association began holding its annual concert in 1988 at venues such as the Weill Concert Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, and Cami Hall. More recently, we have been able to expand throughout the city with concerts and smaller presentations at schools and other community venues.
Our artists come from diverse backgrounds and experiences; many were born and trained in the United States, others are immigrants trained in their countries of origin but who came to continue their studies here; others are professionals who emigrated from countries in political turmoil. Overall, among our artists are represented the countries of Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Italy, Cuba, Russian, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.
We have featured well-established opera singers such as the tenor Juan Cuevas; sopranos Eileen Sierra, Celia Castro, Claudia Montiel, Patricia Ruiz, Virginia Herrera, and mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna Lorraine. In addition, renown pianists such as Martin Soderberg, Gilberto Lavastidas, and Rafael "Bullumba" Landestoy, renowned as a prolific composer of boleros and classical works for piano. .
Our concerts have attracted a largely hispanic audience from all parts of the New York metropolitan area. There are no barriers to the enjoyment of "classical" music, but it is rarely performed in many parts of even this great metropolis. We seek to bring live performances to those communities.
In 2010, ADCA launched a free concert series focused on Dominican music and took the series uptown to The City College of New York. The series quickly "sold out," proving that there is an enormous audience for this music.
YOU can help us reach a larger audience by helping us keep the series free of charge--an especially important factor in getting young people to attend these events. Our funds are extremely limited and we are currently struggling to cover the approximately $5,000 required per concert.
